Metrology

Abrasion processing is critical processes used to achieve the high levels of surface finish and dimensional accuracy required for metrology instruments and components. These processes ensure that measurement tools and devices can deliver precise and reliable results, which is essential for quality control, research, and development across various industries.

Achieving the precise thickness and flatness required for high-precision scales and rulers used in metrology. This ensures accurate measurements and readings.

Surface plates serve as a baseline for inspections, gauging, and layout operations. Lapping ensures these plates are perfectly flat and meet the required specifications for surface roughness, enabling accurate measurements.

Gauge blocks are a system for producing precision lengths. The final step in manufacturing gauge blocks often involves lapping and polishing to achieve surfaces that are extremely flat and smooth. This allows them to be stacked or wrung together to create various lengths with high accuracy.

Optical flats are used in conjunction with monochromatic light sources to measure the flatness of surfaces. Lapping and polishing is crucial in producing optical flats with extremely high surface quality, necessary for accurate flatness measurements.

Used in roundness measurement and calibration, precision spheres and cylinders undergo lapping to attain the surface finish and sphericity needed for accurate metrology applications.

In optical metrology, the quality of lenses and prisms directly affects measurement accuracy. Polishing is essential to eliminate surface irregularities and achieve the optical clarity required for precise measurements.

The measuring surfaces of micrometers must be perfectly flat and polished to ensure accurate measurements. Even minor surface imperfections can lead to measurement errors.

Blocks used for calibrating ultrasonic testing equipment are lapped and polished to ensure their surfaces and dimensions meet stringent standards, which is critical for the accurate calibration of ultrasonic probes.

Some metrology applications require mirror-like finishes on reference surfaces to ensure accurate reflection of light or laser beams for measurement. Polishing is used to achieve these finishes.

Components of high-precision metrology equipment, such as the stages used in coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), require polishing to ensure smooth motion and accurate positioning.
