Brief Introduction

Double Sided Lapping and Polishing Series features a pair of parallel plates that are not only able to achieve the accurate thickness, but also improve the parallelism, flatness and roughness of workpieces. The series has the ability to simultaneously process two opposite sides with twice the efficiency compared to Flat Lapping Machine. Therefore, it is suitable for workpieces with parallel surfaces.

Engineering Intent

During operation, the upper and lower plates exert pressure on the workpieces from two directions while rotating independently and simultaneously. Meanwhile, the sun wheel drives the planet wheels in a circular orbit to achieve double-sided processing. Additionally, a non-contact height gauge inspects the feeding depth of upper plate for measuring the thickness of the product. To maintain parallelism between the plates, it is imperative to evenly distribute at least of three planet wheels across the lower lapping plate.

Key Facts

1. Difference Between Lapping and Polishig Equipment

The primary way to distinguish between lapping and polishing models is whether they are equipped with a Facing & Grooving System (FGS), even if they share the same structural design. Secondly, differences also lie in the materials of the slurry and plate, as well as how the abrasive is applied to the plate.

2. Difference Between the Standard and Advanced Models

The Double Sided Lapping and Polishing series features a pair of synthetic abrasive plates positioned vertically. This series is particularly dedicated to achieving parallelism, as well as flatness and roughness on double-sided objects. Originating from Flat Lapping, it has evolved into a distinct series, although it maintains the same abrasive techniques.

There are two variations of the upper plate within the series: Standard and Advanced. The Advanced version is more precise in terms of parallelism and stability, supported by two uprights for the upper plates. Specifically, the Advanced model is outfitted with a Dual Blade Facing & Grooving System (FGS) and an independent FGS spindle, surpassing the Standard model in performance. Consequently, the Standard model often utilizes durable abrasive plates, like cast-iron, whereas the Advanced model is compatible with a wider variety of lapping plates.

3. Facing & Grooving System (FGS)

The Facing & Grooving System (FGS) is commonly implemented in lapping machines to linearly trim along the abrasive layer of lapping plate with a disc cutter. This is done to restore the flatness of the abrasive layer to its original condition. Meanwhile, creating spiral grooves on the lapping abrasive serves to hold the slurry within the grooves for a longer period. Additionally, grooving evenly distributes the consumption of the abrasive, extending the precision of the lapping layer.

Unlike flat polishing machines, which typically do not include FGS, some polishing pads are pre-grooved before leaving the factory. Likewise, lapping plates with hard abrasives, such as cast-iron plates that are difficult for cutters to shape. For this situation, a diamond-electro-plated conditioning ring is used for plate adjustment instead.

*The Dual Blade Facing & Grooving System is equipped with two cutters installed in opposite directions, targeting both upper and lower plates.

4. Repairing Cast Iron Plate

The lapping machine equipped with a cast iron plate might not come with a Facing & Grooving System, as it's unable to shave the cast iron abrasive for repairs due to the material's exceptional hardness and toughness. As a result, we opt for a (double-sided) diamond-electro-plated conditioning ring instead. This approach utilizes the concept of lapping, where the cast iron is lapped by the diamond layer on the conditioning ring. When using this ring, a lubricant is also necessary to smooth the repair process.
