Brief Introduction

The light edition and laboratory edition are specifically designed for the single-sided lapping of small to medium-sized workpieces. The series features a cast iron machine body that has undergone a three-year aging treatment, ensuring excellent stability during processing. Moreover, the series offers up to sixteen configurable options, tailored to the characteristics and processes of different workpieces, addressing a variety of machining scenarios. During some specific lapping operations, the series is capable of achieving ultra-precision machining with a flatness level below 50 nanometers.

Engineering Intent

While engineering the series, meticulous efforts are made to minimize the impact of external forces from environment on the dynamic balance of the workpiece. This is aimed at achieving superior flatness accuracy. In addition, the equipment incorporates an integrated Facing & Grooving System that utilizes turning methods to eliminate any end face runout of the lapping abrasive layer, thereby restoring the flatness of the lapping plate.

Key Facts

1. Difference Between Lapping and Polishig Equipment

The primary way to distinguish between lapping and polishing models is whether they are equipped with a Facing & Grooving System (FGS), even if they share the same structural design. Secondly, differences also lie in the materials of the slurry and plate, as well as how the abrasive is applied to the plate.

2. What is Flat Lapping

Flat lapping is a method used for achieving precise surface flattening. Essentially, this process is utilized to enhance the flatness and, in some instances, the smoothness of the item being worked on. The majority of lapping operations involve the use of a powder-slurry and a synthetic metal lapping plate. In specific scenarios, particularly hard materials, such as diamond, undergo dry lapping with abrasive powders. Less frequently, some processes might not use any powder or slurry at all, relying solely on the lapping plate.

When the hardness of the workpiece surpasses HRA 80, lapping can achieve a mirror-smooth surface. This is because the hard material partially neutralizes the abrasive's effectiveness, leading to a fine removal of the workpiece's surface that mimics the effect of polishing thus we call it lap-polishing.

3. What is Flat Polishing

Flat Polishing is a process designed to improve surface roughness. It operates similarly to lapping on the same equipment but differs in the consumables applied. Most polishing processes involve applying a very fine powder slurry to a polishing pad, whereas lapping typically uses coarser powders and a synthetic metal plate. Polishing slurries are categorized into neutral, acid, and alkaline based on the solution's pH value.

Under microscopic examination, acid and alkaline slurries work by gradually corroding and softening the object's surface layer, transforming it into a thin film of extremely fine and soft particles. This characteristic helps the polishing pad and powder to effortlessly remove these particles, achieving an ultra-fine roughness level. This technique is known as Chemical Mechanical Polishing (CMP). Conversely, neutral slurry is used less frequently, and its application largely depends on the corrosion resistance of the material being processed.

4. Facing & Grooving System (FGS)

The Facing & Grooving System (FGS) is commonly implemented in lapping machines to linearly trim along the abrasive layer of lapping plate with a disc cutter. This is done to restore the flatness of the abrasive layer to its original condition. Meanwhile, creating spiral grooves on the lapping abrasive serves to hold the slurry within the grooves for a longer period. Additionally, grooving evenly distributes the consumption of the abrasive, extending the precision of the lapping layer.

Unlike flat polishing machines, which typically do not include FGS, some polishing pads are pre-grooved before leaving the factory. Likewise, lapping plates with hard abrasives, such as cast-iron plates that are difficult for cutters to shape. For this situation, a diamond-electro-plated conditioning ring is used for plate adjustment instead.
